Medical Pill (up to 10.6 weeks)

The Abortion Pill known as a non-surgical abortion or medication abortion has been used in our center for over 10 years.

How It Works

It blocks progesterone, the hormone that is needed to sustain a pregnancy. This is an option for women who do not what to undergo the abortion procedure early in the pregnancy.

Abortion Pill / Medication Abortion Process

  • Confirmation of pregnancy by ultrasound and lab test.
  • The first pill is taken in the office. Usually there are no symptoms. Occasionally, you may experience some spotting or bleeding.
  • Your doctor will advise you on how the remaining pills are to be taken.
  • You may experience slight nausea. Usually you will have mild to strong cramping starting 1-2 hours after remaining pills are taken, followed by bleeding which can be heavy for several hours. It will become like your period, and light spotting may continue for up to 10 days.
  • After 2 weeks, you must have a follow up visit to the office to confirm the medical abortion was successful.
  • In 1%-2% of women, the pill does not work, and they may need a further care.

Please note: Completion of an unsuccessful non-surgical medical abortion may be necessary for an additional fee.
